Overview

A common procedure, a tooth extraction permanently removes a tooth from its socket, and may be a simple extraction or require surgical extraction, depending on the patient’s circumstances. Many young adults have their wisdom teeth extracted or other adult teeth removed in order to create a healthy, functional smile. Extraction may be required for other reasons, including:

  • Risk of Infection - Teeth that pose a high risk of infection may be removed from patients at risk from weakened immune systems or when receiving treatments such as chemotherapy.
  • Preparation for a Denture – On rare occasions teeth are removed to prepare the mouth for a complete denture.
  • Crowding - Crooked teeth may prevent needed orthodontic work, and may need to be removed

Replacement of Missing Teeth ● Overview

Following extraction some form of tooth replacement may be required.

When faced with the prospect of having missing teeth replaced it is important you, as the patient, have a basic understanding of the treatment options available to you from your dentist. To aid you in this area the chart below outlines the fundamental choices you and your dentist are likely to discuss, the preferred treatment being determined by individual diagnosis and the patient’s particular circumstances.
