Overview

A common procedure, a tooth extraction permanently removes a tooth from its socket, and may be a simple extraction or require surgical extraction, depending on the patient’s circumstances. Many young adults have their wisdom teeth extracted or other adult teeth removed in order to create a healthy, functional smile. Extraction may be required for other reasons, including:

  • Risk of Infection - Teeth that pose a high risk of infection may be removed from patients at risk from weakened immune systems or when receiving treatments such as chemotherapy.
  • Preparation for a Denture – On rare occasions teeth are removed to prepare the mouth for a complete denture.
  • Crowding - Crooked teeth may prevent needed orthodontic work, and may need to be removed

Replacement of Missing Teeth ● Overview

Following extraction some form of tooth replacement may be required.
